Legend has it that Queen Victoria, making her one and only stop-over at Burton Agnes Hall, entered the estate by the lane from the North, her carriages driving down from Woldgate. As she neared the gatehouse, it is remembered that she turned her gaze to the setting sun bathing the picturesque wolds in a warm glow, and whereupon the men of Burton Agnes were playing Cricket. “Halt” she exclaimed to her courtiers thus bringing her entourage to a complete stop. Allowing herself a minute or so to take in the scene, she is alleged to have said;
“This, is my England”
