The final league game of the season. With both teams’ safe and Middleton still feeling the effects of the Hospital Cup open tour bus trip around Middleton, Bainton and Kirkburn this game was always going to be played at a much slower pace. Batting orders were reversed, non-bowlers bowled and wicket keepers kept wicket who normally field fine leg (at both ends).
For a cricket purist these nights can be a nightmare. However, with the game being played in such a good spirit this time it somehow felt right. Agnes hopscotched their way to 84. Skipper Rob Norman batting in a vest, t shirt, Agnes Jumper and bin bag in the current weather condition was almost as foolish as some of the decisions that Tom Norman made on Rob Norman’s stag do (we’ll leave that one for another night).
Middleton’s reply got off to a terrible start. At 25-5 thanks to some tight bowling from Fred Langton and Will Norman (this really happened) it looked like the pizzas were going taste extra special. The insatiable George Drury had other plans and with support from a man called Mike saw MandND to victory.
The pizzas still tasted as good as usual, Watty smoked his vape indoors and the illusive Sam Moore ordered calamari.
The port moment was decided to be saved for the first Dave Jackson Cup that takes place at Flixton next Friday.
A fantastic league campaign. Onwards and upwards for the 2020 season.
